How to Locate and Read Your Water Meter

There are two main reasons to check your water meter:

• Track water usage by comparing readings at the beginning and end of the day.
• Check for leaks by turning off all water fixtures and watching the meter. If it continues to move, you may have a leak.

Step 1: Locate Your Meter

Your meter is typically located near the curb in front of your home or business, usually on the property line to either side.

. It is housed in a concrete or black plastic box. Use a screwdriver or similar tool to carefully lift the lid and check for insects or other animals before reaching inside.

Step 2: Read Your Meter

Benton Water uses Sensus straight-reading meters, which display water usage like a car odometer. The register contains seven digits and records water use in gallons.

Step 3: Understand Your Usage

Meter readings are collected and converted to the total usage of the billing cycle to calculate your water bill. Compare readings over time to monitor usage and detect potential leaks.
